Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert

I can’t say I was a huge fan of Eat Pray Love. Maybe because I watched the movie before I read the book but I was underwhelmed. However, Liz Gilbert’s Book on living creatively Big Magic hit me in all the right places.

I knew before I listened to it she is proponent of The Artist Way and follows the teaching of Julia Cameron so it’s not a big surprise that her book also subscribed to some of the same general concepts of where creativity comes from and how we are all creative beings. This spoke to me because TAW has resonated with me for several years now. She doesn’t reference TAW components specifically but basic principles of habit forming, addressing fears and doubts, and the origins of creative inspiration are all familiar.

I loved that she opened the book with a story about a friend who found her creative expression in her 40s through ice skating. This isn’t a “build a new career in easy 10 steps” book. It is a book about living your best life through creativity because we are all creative beings simply because we are human.
